Camp Skote

Founded in Newfoundland, Canada

At Camp Skote, our vision is simple: reconnect people with the outdoors and make meaningful outdoor education accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.

For many people today, nature has become distant. Getting outside — even for something as simple as a weekend camping trip — often feels complicated, expensive, or out of reach. Campsites cost money, travel adds up, and learning outdoor skills can feel intimidating when you don’t know where to start or don’t already have a connection to that world. We believe it shouldn’t be that way.

The truth is, the outdoors itself is not exclusive. Many of life’s best adventures can be simple and affordable. The real barrier is access — access to knowledge, confidence, shared gear, and a welcoming place to begin. Camp Skote exists to lower those barriers through structured, curriculum-based outdoor learning delivered in safe and supportive environments.

Everything we plan to do is built around inclusivity, accessibility, and community. We serve individuals, families and communities seeking greater connection to the outdoors. Our goal is to make programs free to participate in wherever possible, gear shared rather than rented, and knowledge passed on openly through guided workshops and instructor-led experiences. Whether someone is young or old, experienced or brand new, rural or urban, Camp Skote is meant to be a starting point for learning, adventure and growth.

At the heart of this vision is a physical Camp Skote location. The long-term dream is to begin with one wild piece of land and, over decades, grow into multiple physical camps. Each camp will be built slowly and intentionally, starting from raw land and shaped by the people who use them. We envision the camps as a place where anyone can come camp for free, learn, explore, and spend meaningful time outside. Each location will serve as an environment to facilitate structured education where participants engage in guided programming design to build outdoor skills, resilience, environmental awareness and community connection. These are not recreational campgrounds; rather, each camp will be a purpose-driven educational space aligned with our charitable mission.

At these camps, we plan to host workshops, outdoor education programs, and community gatherings. They would be places for learning practical outdoor skills, reconnecting with nature, and simply being outside without pressure or cost while participating in structured and supervised programming. All programs shall operate under stringent safety and governance protocols to create and maintain a safe and responsible camper experience.

Beyond the physical camps, Camp Skote’s vision includes a decentralized network of local Camp Skote groups — community-led clubs supported with shared gear, training resources, mentorship, and guidance. Each group would be rooted in its own place and culture, but connected by shared values of respect for nature, safety, and inclusion while operating under Camp Skote's safety standards, program framework, and governance oversight.

The internet plays a key role in powering this vision. Through storytelling, education, and real-world documentation, we plan to connect people to the project and to each other. With the support of sponsors, partners, and grassroots crowdfunding from the Skote community, we aim to keep costs low and impact high — putting resources where they matter most: delivering high quality outdoor education and community based programs.

We believe there has never been a more important time to reconnect with the wild side of life. Nature is one of the world’s greatest teachers and healers. Time spent outside builds confidence, resilience, curiosity, and care — for ourselves, for each other, and for the places we live.

Camp Skote’s vision is a future where outdoor experiences are widely accessible and where communities across the country are empowered to lead the way back outdoors through education, stewardship, and shared learning.
